Oprahs book club is back!

After a year long hiatus within the book club, Oprah announces that she has chosen “The Measure of a Man” -by Sidney Poitier to start off 2007 and her book club. Started back on September 17, 1996… wow, it does not seem that long ago. Oprahs book club was started to celebrate books, the authors and the joy they bring to people. Simply, a reading book club that is featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show.

She began this book club by choosing works of fiction then inviting the books author and selected viewers to join her for an intimate follow-up discussion.

All the book selections made on Oprahs Book Club quickly skyrocket to the top of bestseller lists. When Oprah speaks, everyone listens including with her favorite book selections for the book club. Needless to say, the Oprah Book Club became an instant sucess right from the start with a very dedicated viewer following. Audio book fans should use this book club to add great audio book titles to their personal talking audio book lists.

April 2002, brought sad times as Oprah put the Book Club on hold until June 2003. She re-launched the book club in 2003 with John Steinbeck’s “East of Eden” another selection which leaped up the best sellers list. With this re-launch, the Oprahs Book Club had a goal to become the biggest Book Club in the world. A task only a person like Oprah Winfrey could sucessfully achieve. In traditional Oprah Winfrey fashion, Oprahs Book Club also partners with the American Library Association (ALA). This partnership takes the Oprah Book Club selections and distributes thousands of free books, donated by the publisher, to schools, public and community college libraries nationwide. The ALA is the oldest and largest library association in the world with over 64,000 members today. If there is a charity need, it seems Oprah Winfrey is always there, and with the Oprah book club, this was a natural way to continue with her wonderful charity committment.

Oprahs Book Club is a heralded event on television closely watched by the faithful Oprahs viewers and , as well as the media and publishing industries. Oprah’s large dedication to promoting the joys and benefits of reading is recognized by industry leaders and have credited Oprah personally with rejuvenating the publishing industry and book clubs.

Just how important is the Oprah Book Club?

  • Newsweek named Oprah the most important person in the world of books and media in 1997
  • The National Book Foundation awarded Oprah its 50th Anniversary Gold Medal in 1999
  • In 2003, the Association of American Publishers presented her with its highest award, the “AAP Honors”
